The Key
Dislocate, founded by Kate Fryer and Geoff Dunstan, is an Australian physical theatre company known for its distinctive fusion of circus technique, visual theatre and sharply observed social commentary. Their work combines precise physicality with humour and theatrical invention, often using stylised movement, object manipulation and strong visual imagery to explore contemporary themes. The Key, which premiered at the Melbourne Arts Centre in 2007, exemplified this approach through a satirical take on government bureaucracy. The premise was deceptively simple: the machinery of bureaucracy grinds to a halt after losing a key essential to its function. Meanwhile, an ordinary figure — Mr Citizen — finds a key in the street and attempts to return it, only to become entangled in escalating layers of red tape. His journey unfolds as a comic yet pointed adventure of automated responses, lost property hotlines, anonymous service booths and an endless demand for forms and documentation. Through physical comedy and theatrical exaggeration, the work exposed the absurdity and circular logic of administrative systems, transforming everyday frustration into inventive stage spectacle.
